My mother in law died in this hospital due to negligence in staff care and lack of proper care on admission. We were asked by staff to leave, despite us feeling the need to stay. We could see the care was lacking. We even attempted to ask the disinterested supervisor on duty to inspect the situation and see if the patient was ok. She yawned. Took her time, came back gave us some lame story that the patient was settled. Even my mother in law’s house doctor whom we phoned near midnight could not get in to help. The patient was not ok! She was completely drugged out. So she couldn’t ask to sit up, or say that she needed to cough or that she was in pain. She ASPIRATED due to a lack of proper nursing care. Due to the lack of a specialist being called to see her on admission.
THIS IS NOT A HOSPITAL. IT IS A MONEY MAKING BUSINESS SCAM! Only when she ended up in ICU, did the nursing staff jump to their toes, like robots. No caring. Just making sure she didn’t die on their watch. Then the surgeons came, like vultures, wanting to operate. When we refused. They disappeared. We had no idea, that the various outsourced anaethetists were in charge of her case. By then it was too late. She became a money making medical aid puppet which the hospital could drain money out of. The hospital is NOT FOR THE ILL BUT A MONEY MAKING BUSINESS. I CHALLENGE ANYONE TO INVESTIGATE MY MOTHER IN LAWS CASE and to interview me and the family affected. YOUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. We lost a wonderful, kind generous woman. What I saw and went through makes me so angry. I saw another old woman being abused by staff, as the old woman was confused. The poor woman had no idea what was going on, as they did not talk to her. Just spoke to each other in Zulu, which clearly she didn’t understand. When she resisted what they were doing, the staff were rough with her. I saw it with my own eyes. I saw my mother in law being banged on the chest, shouting out her name, instead of gently talking to her. I saw her in pain and discomfort. Whether the gown cord was too tight or the needle holding her breathing pipe pulling at her skin. I saw robotic nurses.. Just paid robots. Your system is abusive. GIVE ME BACK MY MOTHER IN LAW, YOUR HOSPITAL IS A CONNIVING DECEITFUL INSTITUTION OF THIEVES WHO STOLE HER LIFE. ONE YEAR ON. LETTERS AND A MEETING. WHERE ARE YOU? FACE IT. YOU MESSED UP.

Not just for me, but for all the people whom you failed through a broken system. Patients who cannot talk are doomed in your system.
Let the patient have a family member sit by their bedside 24 hours a day. I understand the limitations on visitors, but the hospital is not doing its job! Visitors are ousted. They are not nurses. Robots. If we had been allowed to stay she would still be alive. If just ONE staff member would have called a specialist or read the medical chart properly. She would have been alive. Her bed would have been lifted and the staff would know she was drugged out, not sleeping. Not comfortable. Not calm. If the supervisor on duty had taken our efforts seriously my mother in law would have been alive. If my mother in law’s house doctor would have been allowed access, my mother in law would still be alive.

PS Do not tell me you will refer this letter to management. They know about this case.
PPS Do not tell me you will refer this letter to Chris. We met him and the head “nurse”. Even they were amazed at the obvious holes we found.
I AM WAITING – over ONE YEAR LATER FOR JUSTICE! Seems like your carpet must be very uneven with all the negative information being swept thereunder.
Why was their no out-roar after one of your top doctors committed suicide? Convince me that the abuse in your hospital didn’t contribute to his death. He was connected to my mother-in-laws case.
Stop bleeding those who need help, who cannot speak for themselves.
STOP THE ABUSE OF A SYSTEM THAT IS SUPPOSED TO HELP THE SICK.
If I could give no stars, I would. My father in law was admitted to the hospital, and we continuously phoned to try and get information about his condition and asked if the doctor could please phone us, as we live 400km away. Eventually, we drove down to Durban to see how he was doing. The staff were very unfriendly and despite my husband giving them his number and requesting that one of the doctors (at least 4 different doctors charged for visits) phone him, we never received any phone call. Every time we phoned, we were told his vitals are stable.
The only phone call we received from the hospital was at 21h00 one night to tell us my father in law had died and the nurse demanded that we immediately arrange for the body to be removed. How callous is that?
I would NOT recommend this hospital to anyone.
Absolutely fantastic stuff, clean, and very good care. Thank you!
My first experience was initially a good one with my mom being admitted to have a port put in her chest, after surgery she was really unwell but went into D ward where we experienced lovely friendly staff. The second evening i was called at 12pm to let me know my mom was being moved to ICU due to a Pneumomediastinum aka air bubble trapped under her lung and between her chest wall.
Thereafter she was moved down to High Care ward B 3rd floor where the service has been HORRIFIC! The nurses are terribly rude, unhelpful, always on their phones. The one nurse politely told my mom to bath herself which lead to my mom crying in the bathroom for an hour with no help. My mom calls the nurses to please help her to the bathroom and no one comes or she is made to wait which lead to her messing herself and then having to wash and sort herself out… and this is HIGH CARE! i am beyond furious!! My mom weighs a mere 36kg and has a serious lung condition MAC and has had surgery for a port to receive critical antibiotics and this is what she has to go through in what is supposed to be an amazing hospital. I feel sick leaving her there and DEMAND someone get in contact with me! High care is disgusting, noisy because phones are on loud all night no rest no assistance from staff.. im horrified.
Would rate it negative stars if that was an option. Abhorrent and disgusting service. My seventy year old mother was admitted for a back op, can hardly walk, DR Coleman’s rooms needed us there at 6am and forced us to wait in reception until midday and wheeled her into theatre in the clothes she arrived in, with her bags on her bed. Nurses never washed their hands – ever, played on their phones all day, picked their noses, no communication whatsoever. It’s honestly repulsive behaviour. Plus you can never get hold of anyone. And this is what you pay ridiculous amounts of money for? They should be in jail.
